Time to update your DAW??

The past couple of months have seen a change in my studio practises.  This had to happen and it was not in my control.  I was using Sony’s Acid Pro 7  and it was great.  I have been a big fan of Sony products since the early 90s.  It was a much easier and better (imho) than the version of Cubase at the time and I used it  for all of my projects.  But as time passed and my own studio expanded into more professional plug-ins (i.e. UAD plugins and some of the  better Waves effects) – I noticed that Acid Pro 7 was crashing like crazy and i had to second guess myself  in terms of saving data and backing up more than I ever thought I would ever have to do – after sending some emails and doing some research, I figured something out.  Most of the companies that make software have issued out upgrades or newer versions.  Some of my software gets upgraded 3-4 times a year on average, but i noticed that Acid Pro 7 hasn’t been upgraded in almost 4 years!!  After some inquiry I found out that there might not even be another version of this for some time.  So – I made the jump to Presonus Studio One version 2 (Producer’s version) and i have been so impressed with this software.  I stacked more effects on one of my tracks than a human should be able to and I had no latency issues, no crashing and no loss of data.

The reason I’m bringing this up – is that I was wondering if anyone else in the community has run into an issue like this.  You know, you have been doing things the same way, but then you run into a brick wall and have to change your recording software/setup/comfortable way of doing things.  I’m looking forward to any other stories you might want to share!!

Here’s a quick update on switching my DAW in the studio!

It has been going so well!  Presonus Studio One version 2 (Producer’s version) is an amazing piece of software and is unbelievably user friendly.  I have recorded the drum tracks for the first 3 songs for One God One Faith’s album and it has been so much easier to use.  The effects that have come with the software and the other 3rd party plugins have been working really well with no latency or other issues.  We are tracking bass over the next week or so and adding some percussion using some Native Instrument software.  I will have a sound sample up for you to listen to soon.

The only negative I have is that I can’t get Addictive Drums or Superior Drummer 2.0 to work with the Presonus DAW yet.  After some quick emails, I’ll share what I have learned about this (hopefully) in the near future.

Thanks for your time and interest!

    Yours In Christ!
